Gourmet cheese online: a short list that covers the whole board
We keep our gourmet cheese online selection short, so every piece earns its place on a board. Between them, these six cheeses cover mild to sharp, soft to firm, and sheep, goat and cow's milk. Prices start from $13.49.
- Ponce de León Young Manchego, aged 3 months, 6 oz. Mild, buttery and lightly nutty. Product of Spain.
- Moliterno sheep's milk cheese, aged six months, 5.3 oz. Sharp, nutty and earthy, firm enough to grate.
- Piccolo Canestrato with pesto, 5.3 oz. Sheep's milk cheese with green basil pesto running through it. Product of Italy.
- Goat Moliterno Bianco, 7 oz. A firm, bright white goat cheese, nutty and rich with a gentle tang.
- Jarlsberg Original, 6 oz. Semi-soft, sweet and nutty, made with the Norwegian recipe from 1956.
- Red Apple Cheese Kosher Muenster, 8 oz. Soft and mild, kosher certified and vegetarian.
The three Italian cheeses come from L'Originale, Central Formaggi. Every order ships cold, so you can add cheese to a caviar or charcuterie order in one box.
Manchego cheese: why young Manchego works on every board
Manchego cheese is the most famous cheese of Spain. It is made from the milk of Manchega sheep, and it is sold at different ages. The longer it ages, the firmer and sharper it gets.
Ours is a young Manchego, aged about three months. At that age it stays mild, buttery and smooth, with a gentle nuttiness. It is easier to love than an aged Manchego and very easy to pair, which is why it shows up on so many boards. The Ponce de León wedge is made from pasteurized Manchega sheep's milk.
How to serve Manchego
- Cut the wedge into thin triangles.
- Remove the rind before serving. It is not edible (on this wedge it is colored with caramel).
- Serve it with jamón ibérico, quince paste and almonds for a classic tapas plate.
- Or keep it simple: a drizzle of honey and a glass of Rioja or dry rosé.
Young Manchego is also the bridge between cheese and meat. It works with sweet acorn-fed ham and with savory dry-cured duck breast, so it is the safest first pick if you only buy one cheese.
Sheep vs goat vs cow's milk cheese, and our kosher cheese
The milk shapes the flavor more than anything else. Here is how to tell them apart on our shelf.
- Sheep's milk is rich and high in fat, so the cheese tastes fuller, nuttier and often saltier. Manchego, Moliterno and Piccolo Canestrato are all sheep's milk cheeses. They are the backbone of a board and stand up to cured meats.
- Goat's milk gives a lighter, fresher cheese with a gentle tang. Goat cheese is naturally white, which is why Goat Moliterno Bianco looks so bright next to aged cheeses. Serve it with crisp white wine.
- Cow's milk is the mildest and most familiar. Jarlsberg is sweet and nutty with round holes; Muenster is soft and one of the best melting cheeses. Both are easy for kids and mixed company.
Kosher cheese
Cheese is only kosher when it is made under kosher supervision, which also covers the rennet used to set the milk. In this collection, the Red Apple Muenster is our kosher cheese: the package is labeled kosher and carries a kosher certification symbol. It is made in Wisconsin as a natural cheese with no preservatives and no animal rennet, so it is also vegetarian. For more certified products, see our kosher collection.
Jarlsberg's label states it is naturally lactose free, which can help when you are serving guests who avoid lactose.
How to build a cheese board, and the right serving temperature
A cheese board needs variety, not volume. Three cheeses are enough for most tables.
- Pick three textures: one mild (young Manchego or Jarlsberg), one with character (aged Moliterno or Canestrato with pesto) and one fresh contrast (Goat Moliterno Bianco).
- Go from mild to sharp: arrange the cheeses in that order and let guests taste in the same direction.
- Add something sweet: honey, fig jam, quince paste, pears, grapes or fresh figs balance salty, sharp cheese.
- Add crunch: walnuts, almonds, thin crisps or mini toasts.
- Add meat: one or two items from our charcuterie turn a cheese plate into a full board.
As a rule of thumb, plan about 1 to 2 oz of each cheese per person for an appetizer board, and a little more if the board replaces dinner.
Serving temperature
Cold mutes flavor. Take cheese out of the fridge about 30 minutes before serving so it can reach room temperature. Firm cheeses become more aromatic, and soft cheeses like Muenster turn creamy. Keep the cut cheese covered until guests arrive so the surface does not dry out.
Pairing cheese with charcuterie and wine
The simple rule: match intensity. Mild cheese goes with delicate meat and light wine; sharp, aged cheese can take rich meat and red wine. Add something sweet to bridge the two. A few pairings that always work with the cheeses on this page:
- Young Manchego + jamón ibérico de bellota: the classic Spanish pairing. Drink Rioja or fino sherry.
- Aged Moliterno + dry-cured duck breast: a bold match. Add fig jam and a glass of red.
- Piccolo Canestrato with pesto + black truffle salami: an Italian aperitivo with olives and prosecco.
- Goat Moliterno Bianco + white truffle salami: mild and creamy next to earthy truffle. Try a crisp white like Sauvignon Blanc or Vermentino.
- Jarlsberg + white truffle salami: an easy everyday board with grapes, walnuts and a glass of white wine.
Our gift sets put these pairings in one box: three matching products at 15% off. The Spanish Tapas Plate, the Duck & Manchego Plate, the Italian Snack Board and the Everyday Cheese Board each make a complete plate. The Muenster Snack Set is a simple family option.
How to store cheese, and how it ships
Keep all of our cheeses refrigerated. Once a piece is cut, wrap it in wax or parchment paper and then loosely in plastic, so it can breathe without drying out. Store it in the vegetable drawer, where the temperature is steady. Firm, aged cheeses like Moliterno keep longer than soft ones like Muenster. Use a separate knife for each cheese on the board, and do not leave cut cheese out for hours: put leftovers back in the fridge after the party. Always follow the date on the package.
